Optimal care for hemophilia patients is beyond the knowledge and training of one healthcare practitioner. A diagnostic and treatment center specializes in providing children and adults with not only physical care, but also with assistance in meeting their psychosocial and financial needs. By developing long-lasting relationships with our patients, the dedicated professionals on our team are able to handle specific issues related to patient care by keeping families informed about the most recent developments in hemophilia therapy.
A study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in collaboration with state health departments, found that Hemophelia Treatment Centers (HTC's) might reduce the mortality rate among patients with hemophilia. 1 In this study, researchers followed a group of patients with hemophilia for a three-year period and compared mortality rates between those treated at an HTC and those receiving care in other healthcare settings. Overall, the mortality rate was reduced by 40 percent when an HTC provided care compared to other healthcare settings. Equally important, researchers also found that nearly 30 percent of individuals with hemophilia were not being treated at an HTC. Further studies are planned to determine what can be done to make patients more aware of hemophilia treatment centers and remove barriers to their use.
