Pediatric Urologist Dix Poppas, MD Honored by CARES Foundation

On March 18, the CARES (Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia Research Education and Support) Foundation honored Dix P. Poppas, MD, for his contributions and commitment to CARES and the congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) community.

Dr. Poppas is Chief of Pediatric Urology at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and the Richard Rodgers Associate Professor of Pediatric Urology in the James Buchanan Brady Department of Urology at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Poppas also serves as Director of the Laboratory for Minimally Invasive Urologic Surgery. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Urology, a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and has published over 60 peer-reviewed manuscripts and over 12 book chapters relating to his clinical and basic science research.

The CARES Foundation is a nonprofit organization that focuses on research, education, and support for families and individuals affected by CAH, a family of inherited disorders affecting the adrenal glands. The most common form is 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21-OHD), which is inherited in severe or mild forms. The severe form, called Classical CAH, is usually detected in the newborn period or in early childhood. The milder form, Non-classical CAH (NCAH), may cause symptoms at anytime from infancy through adulthood. Fortunately, CAH can be managed with medication and, with adequate care, affected individuals can go on to live normal lives.

Dr. Poppas, who serves on CARES' Scientific and Advisory Board, was honored along with Pfizer, Inc. at the "Everyone CARES Gala," held this year at Tribeca Rooftop in New York.
