Weill Cornell Unpower Hour -- Thursday, April 3, 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Join the campus-wide Weill Cornell Unpower Hour on Thursday, April 3, 2008 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Turn off as many electrical appliances and lights for one hour at work. This event is part of Weill Cornell's campaign to raise awarness about our reliance upon energy and the value of energy conservation. During the Unpower Hour, Engineering and Maintenance staff will reduce lights in public areas and reduce outputs of various HVAC systems.

For those who signed up for the Unpower Hour raffle, the Department of Pediatrics raffle will be held just before the "Unpower Hour" on April 3 at 1:30 in M-607 (Pediatric Library). The winner will be notified; you do not need to be present to win.

GO GREEN TIPS

  • If every home in New York City replaced 75% of their light bulbs with compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs), we would save enough energy to run all the subways and light all the train stations. CFL lightbulbs last ten times longer, too -- so everyone saves!
  • Unplug cell phone, PDA and other chargers when not in use. They use electricity, even when they are not charging.
  • Turn off lights when not in use, including office lights, desk lamps and bathroom switches.
  • Consider using a ceramic or glass (reusable) mug instead of paper or styrofoam cups.
  • Save paper whenever possible. Circulate memos by email and consider not printing documents if they can be read or stored online. Save ink by using the "draft" mode.
  • At home: Wash laundry in cold water for substantial energy savings. About 90% of a washing machine's energy use is for heating water for the load!
