Research

The Department of Pediatrics brings together basic medical science and clinical medicine for the advancement of patient care. The Department conducts extensive laboratory and clinical research with the goal of improving the diagnosis, management, and treatment of childhood illnesses.

Current areas of research include:

  • The effect of endocannabinoid system on body weight and appetite of patients with Prader Willi syndrome
  • Investigations into the "microenvironment" of the metastic site – the enzymes, proteins, and growth factors that encourage cancer's spread.
  • The development of new orally effective compounds which can promote iron excretion in iron overloaded thalassemia patients
  • The molecular development of the human cellular immune response and how this may be modulated by microbial encounters
  • Ways of allowing healthy genes to be successfully transferred into hematopoietic stem cells using lentivirus-based gene transfer, leading to a cure for thalassemia and other hematological diseases
  • The use of gene-based vaccines against pulmonary pathogens
  • Pediatric anxiety
  • Eating disorders in adolescents
  • Molecular genetic examinations of ADHD
  • Studies in adrenal steroids and congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH)
  • Multidisciplinary collaborations in diabetes and metabolic bone disease
  • The impact of participation in a ballroom dance program on the physical activity level, activity patterns, and perceived exertion of school-aged children.
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Cardiomyopathies
  • Spinal muscular atrophy
  • Molecular pathogenesis of human paramyxoviruses
  • Molecular epidemiology of emerging resistance to bacteria to antibiotics
  • Neonatal respiratory physiology
  • Mediators of neonatal inflammation and infection
  • Neonatal growth and development
