Research
Child and adolescent psychiatrists affiliated with Komansky Center for Children's Health are conducting extensive research projects covering a range of mental health issues.
The Hospital is the recipient of a research grant to study children's stress reactions to the terrorist attach of September 11.
Psychiatrists at the Columbia University/New York State Psychiatric Institute at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian are involved in many child and adolescent psychiatric studies including those focusing on
-
various aspects of pediatric anxiety;
-
teenage suicide;
-
evaluation of telephone crisis services for adolescents;
-
eating disorders in adolescents;
-
epidemiology research on the prevalence of childhood psychiatric disorders, their associated risk factors and their natural history;
-
mood disorders;
-
ADHD.
Studies have been completed that focused on the reduction of psychological and behavioral distress in children undergoing cardiac catheterization and invasive oncological procedures.
At the Sackler Institute for Developmental Psychobiology Research at both Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian and the Komansky Center for Children's Health, investigators are focusing on the development of basic cognitive skills related to attention, affect regulation and basic learning from birth to adulthood and their disruption in developmental disorders. Some of these studies include
-
face processing development;
-
the development of training as a method of probing mechanisms of learning in the human brain and as a means of providing treatment for disorders;
-
genetic studies such as molecular genetic examinations of ADHD and studies to understand the biology of borderline personality.
Clinical studies are underway to examine how hypnotism alters the attention process. Investigators are also making progress in diagnosing ADHD and treating it, using pharmacological and behavioral therapies.
