Quality and Medical Informatics

Welcome from the Division of Quality and Medical Informatics at Weill Cornell Medical College.

Our mission is to improve clinical quality and patient safety, particularly through the use of health information technology (health IT). We are excited to be engaged in a wide variety of timely and novel initiatives, including research, patient care, training, and operational activities.

Improving quality and safety through health IT has become a national and state priority. Weill Cornell Medical College and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital have long been leaders in advancing the use of health IT. Recognizing the importance of health IT as a cornerstone of health care reform, they supported the creation of this unique division.

We focus on evaluations of innovative health IT applications, including electronic prescribing, electronic health records, personal health records and health information exchange. We also investigate new forms of healthcare delivery such as the medical home and pay for performance programs. Our evaluations occur within our institution as well as in communities in New York State and nationally.

We study the effectiveness and comparative effectiveness of health IT applications, with a particular focus on economic, quality, safety, patient, and provider outcomes. We are also interested in health IT adoption, health IT policy, and unintended consequences from the use of health IT. Our Division is fortunate to have expertise in multiple disciplines including research methodology, clinical informatics, and quality improvement.

We disseminate our findings widely across the institution striving to improve each patient's experience at the Komansky Center for Children's Health. We are also very active nationally through academic publications, presentations, and invited talks. In addition, faculty members have been appointed to serve on national health IT, patient safety and quality committees.

Finally, we are very involved in teaching and mentoring the next generation of health services researchers and operational experts in health IT and quality.

We invite you to learn more about our Division through our website and we welcome any direct inquiries.
